As 2011 draws to an end, let me do a re-cap of my favorite product out of Mountain View this year.  (To follow me on Google+, go here.)

June 30, 2011

Checked into Twitter one evening on June 30th to find out that a bunch of people who I typically communicate with were getting invites to Google+ so I of course begged and groveled for my way in! :) When I was finally able to log in, I actually had notifications from 6 other people, from various sources, who had also invited me. I felt well loved!

The first month

…was a lot of meta chatter about what Google+ was and how to use it. As new features got added and bugs got ironed out, it became clear that I really, really, *really* liked G+ even in its “field test” form. Completely forgot about Twitter and started posting most of my content there. Some people like Kevin Rose have even redirected their personal domain names (kevinrose.com) and quit blogging to post primarily to Google+.

Why?

I'm running a few workshops over the next few months, check out klab.eventbrite.com for a full listing.

My next one is Dec 11th and it's on the Arduino ADK and Android Open Accessory APIs. Get tickets here: adk.eventbrite.com.
Some changes happening in the new year so if you'll like to keep up to day, just add the Karma Laboratory Google+ page to your circles!

My apologies if you've wandered over here from a link and you're seeing content from 2009 -- I just haven't had the time to maintain this blog.

You may wish to instead point your browser to http://gplus.to/pearl to catch up with me on Google+. (If you need an invite, let me know!)

Occasionally I make appearances on Twitter too: @androidsNsheep

Also of note: the most popular page on this site is my electronics shopping guide. You can find a list of Toronto and online retailers that carry DIY electronics from the sidebar (Resources > Shopping) or go to http://karma-laboratory.com/resources/electronics/shopping

Cheers!
Come check it out along with the other CFC prototypes!

A "Minty Boost" is a portable, battery-powered alternative to charging your electronic devices via your devices USB charging cord.

All the electronics and 2 AA batteries fit inside an Altoids gum tin so you can carry one in your purse/suitcase or leave one in the car for emergency situations. From two full batteries, you should be able to recharge an iPod at least 1.5 times!

I have tons of these DIY kits leftover from an electronics workshop that I taught. You can buy a kit from me for $20 flat (same price as buying online but no shipping!) which includes all of the electronics components. Kits can be put together in under an hour. Note that kits do NOT include a tin, USB cables, or batteries.

For $35, I will assemble one for you and put it in an unique, rockin' tin (as you can see below, I got myself a Napoleon Dynamite candy tin) or a regular Altoid gum tin.

Please email pearl(at)karma-laboratory(dot)com to arrange a pick up at my studio close to Queen and Bathurst.

BONUS OFFER: Maybe you want to put one together yourself but don't know anything about soldering or electronics?? For $50, you supply the tin and I will supply 1 hour of studio time and offer assistance in turning you into a Minty Boost soldering master! :)

Launched a new blog the other week where I will be dumping most of my Android development thoughts... along with some funny videos here and there. :)

My first compiled Android application!!

I look forward to working on the Android platform for many reasons but I love that it's Java so it'll look a lot like AS3/Flex code -- just gotta keep my prefix and post-colon type declaration syntax straight! ;)

This is my entry for a FREE FITC ticket that the organizers are giving away to the first 100 female submitters.

I thought that I would make a Flash movie that dynamically loaded in some words and memories I have of FITC past (but starting only with the letters F,I,T, and C, of course) to show why I love going to FITC every year.
